Andy Said What?

January 1, 2009 at 8:12 pm (Books)

Andy said there are three components of organizational momentum.

1. Start something new.
Momentum is never triggered by tweaking something old.
It is triggered by introducing something new.

2. What is new must be improved.
“Improved” means it is a noticeable improvement over the old.
If you are in an environment where you can’t afford to do
anything new, you are doing too many things.

3. Momentum is sustained by continuous improvement.
Take the stuff that is working, and try to
find a way to make it work better.

One of the most compelling statements Andy made follows:

“You know when you have momentum.

In “church world” we can go for generations with no momentum, and no concern over the lack of momentum, as long as we can pay the bills.  As long as we can pay the bills, a lack of momentum is not a heartbreak!

Momentum is very disruptive in traditional churches.  It breaks the systems. There will emerge an invisible dynamic that will emerge to press down the momentum….because momentum disturbs.

If you have momentum, and you don’t know why you do, you are one stupid decision away from killing it.”

The Big Idea : Part Two

September 12, 2008 at 5:31 am (Books)

Here is a quote for you from pastor Juan Carlos Ortiz.  “The average Christian is educated to at least three years beyond their level of obedience.”

I can relate.  In fact, I would gander that here in the U.S. that number is closer to seven to ten years.  It was 1992 when Steve Shadrach started discipling and pouring into me.  Flash forward to 2007, before I realized it is all about one person pouring into another person.  How many times have I gone home with some of the best and most applicable concepts for my life only to relegate those life applications to another few pounds of spiritual obesity.

I am one of those people.  I am Spiritually Obese.  I have taken what the church has to offer and stored it up inside of me like a bear preparing for hibernation.  I have allowed the river of truth to flow into me, but I have failed so miserably at allowing that river to flow out.  I have kept it all for myself.  I have let truth float around inside of me for so many years that the river has become stale, algae covered, and just plain nasty.

Lord, I pray that I will no longer be that person.  I pray that I will be an obedient servant who no longer stores up his nuts for winter, but passes along all that you have given to me. Amen

The Big Idea

September 11, 2008 at 4:22 pm (Books)

Book:  The Big Idea.

It is official, I no longer want to be a Christian.  In fact, I no longer am motivated to want anyone else to ever be a Christian either.
  • 85% of Americans profess to be Christians.  That is 247 million people just in America.
  • Statistically Christians are no more likely to give assistance to a homeless person.
  • Christians are no more likely than non-Christians to correct a cashier when they give them too much change.
  • A Christian is just as likely to get an elective abortion as a non Christian
  • Divorce rates among Christians are just as high as among non-Christians
  • 50% of the churches in America did not help one person find Christ last year.
That last statistic is probably a good thing.  We do not need anymore people like me, if that is what Christianity has come to.

Maybe we can start over.  Jesus never invited anyone to become a Christian.  He simply asked them to follow Him.  So from here on out I am going to try and refer to myself as a Christ Follower.

This way I can start immediately tainting another Christian slogan with the mediocracy I call Christianity.
